Professional Supplement Center’s 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a plant-based amino acid derived from the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia. It plays an important role in the production of serotonin, which helps regulate and balance mood. 5-HTP is the precursor to serotonin which is created from the amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that plays a role in making proteins and chemicals used in brain signals.
Low levels of serotonin have been associated with mood disorders, anxiety, and sleep issues. Studies have shown that depriving the brain of tryptophan, thereby decreasing serotonin synthesis, can induce mood disorders within hours.
